The places

A province still in no hurry

Every itinerary is assembled from these — a prehistoric forest, temples on hillsides, a morning market on the water, and the herbal gardens the workshops are picked from. Here they all are, and a map of where they sit.

Location details

The 100-metre Crystal SanctuaryWat Tha Sung

A sanctuary lined inside and out with glass mosaic and mirror. It houses a replica of Phra Buddha Chinnarat and the glass busabok holding the body of Luang Pho Ruesi Ling Dam — the highlight of Wat Chantharam (Tha Sung), one of the most beautiful temples in Thailand.

Opening hours · Morning 09.00 – 11.45 · Afternoon 14.00 – 16.00

The Kanchanaphisek Golden CastleWat Tha Sung

A vast golden castle of exceptional craftsmanship, where mirrored halls reflect the gilded Buddha images inside. The same grounds hold the 30-cubit standing Buddha and the Somdet Ong Pathom viharn.

Opening hours · Morning 09.00 – 11.30 · Afternoon 14.00 – 16.00

Wat Uposatharam (Wat Bot)The old riverside temple

An ancient riverside temple dating to the late Ayutthaya period. Its landmarks are the century-old octagonal pavilion blending European and Chinese styles, three riverside pagodas from three eras, and the old murals inside the ubosot.

Wat AmarutwareeWorkshops and massage

A temple woven into the life of Uthai Thani since the early Rattanakosin period, now an exemplary community moral centre — and the home of the herbal workshops and Thai massage on every program.

Baan Jongrak caféA wooden house in the old town

A café and small museum inside a heritage wooden house downtown, created by a father and daughter who turned the family home into a place for sharing memories.

Opening hours · Café (1st floor): 08.00 – 17.00, closed Wed–Thu · Museum (2nd floor): Sat, Sun, Mon and public holidays, 09.00 – 16.00

Baan Pae Sakae KrangA floating raft-house café

The Sakae Krang raft houses are the last legally registered floating community in Thailand. A river cruise passes gourami fish cages and pandan plots, morning or evening.

Opening hours · River cruise: morning 07.00 – 08.30 · evening 16.30 – 18.00

Trok Rong Ya walking streetThe old market — Saturdays only

A cultural walking street among preserved two-storey Chinese shophouses. Under Rama V and VI this lane was the hub of the Chinese community and home to a licensed opium house, before locals revived it as a night market.

Opening hours · Saturdays only, 16.00 – 21.00

Wat Sangkat Rattana KhiriThe 449-step naga stairway up Sakae Krang hill

The town’s own temple, at the foot and the summit of Sakae Krang hill. It holds the Sukhothai-era Phra Buddha Mongkhonsak, the 449-step naga stairway, the golden hilltop mondop, and the monument to the Royal Father of King Rama I. Each year the Tak Bat Devo procession descends those steps after the end of Buddhist Lent.

Local history museumA heritage wooden building

A pale-green two-storey wooden building, over 80 years old, once a classroom block of Benjamarachuthit School — named by King Rama VI in honour of King Rama V.

Opening hours · Mon – Fri, 09.00 – 15.00 (closed weekends and public holidays)

Wat Pha ThangBan Rai district

Home to Luang Pho To in the blessing posture — the largest Buddha image in the province at 23 metres across the lap and 52 metres tall, visible from far away. Beneath the statue stands a hall of revered monk figures, reached along a naga-lined walkway.

Wat Tham Khao PratunThailand's only golden-teak root ubosot

A quiet, shaded temple known for rare woodwork. Its ubosot is built and decorated from roots, stumps and ancient golden teak, carved with scenes from the life of the Buddha.

Hup Pa TatThailand's prehistoric forest, Lan Sak

An Unseen Thailand site known as the country’s prehistoric forest. It opens with a 50-metre unlit cave tunnel, then a limestone valley dense with tad palms — and the only place in Thailand where the pink dragon millipede appears (roughly August to November). The nature trail runs about 700 metres.

Opening hours · Allow 30 minutes to an hour · bring a torch

Wat Tham Khao WongA four-storey teak house beneath the cliff

One of Thailand’s most striking Unseen temples: a four-storey teak house in the shadow of a limestone cliff, its top floor a quiet wooden ubosot. A wooden bridge and pond mirror the building at the front, and seven or eight natural caves sit on the trail behind.

Opening hours · 08.00 – 17.00

The giant treeBan Sanam, Ban Rai

A 400-year-old bee tree standing tall in a green betel-palm grove tended by an old Lao Khrang community — one of the province’s best-known natural landmarks.

Sao Hai marketAn organic community market in Ban Rai

An organic community market started by local farmers, artists and growers to show the identity, the traditional way of life and the safe produce of Ban Rai.

Opening hours · Saturdays and Sundays only, 09.00 – 16.00

Phu Pang Sawan herbal gardenA herbal learning garden in Ban Rai

An agro-tourism destination and herbal learning centre tucked into the valleys of Ban Rai. Rare Thai and foreign herbs are grown and labelled throughout, alongside organic teas, essential oils and soaps — and a garden café looking out at the hills.

Ban Pha Thang heritage textile centreLao Khrang hand-weaving, honoured by UNESCO

A centre preserving the ancient hand-woven patterns of the Lao Khrang people, whose craftsmanship earned top global honours from UNESCO. Look for tin chok sarongs and the naga, swan and flanking-elephant motifs, naturally dyed and threaded with gold. Weavers work traditional looms on site, and every purchase goes straight back to the community.

Sakae Krang river cruiseThailand's last raft-house community

A slow-life highlight along the Sakae Krang raft-house community — the last legally registered floating community in Thailand. Both banks show gourami fish cages and pandan plots as you drift past.

Opening hours · Morning 07.00 – 08.30 · Evening 16.30 – 18.00
